Orthodontic Treatment Requires a Healthy Mouth

Disease is Caused By Plaque

The most common dental problems are cavities and gum disease. Both of these are caused by a bacterial biofilm called plaque
.

What is PLAQUE?

Whether we like it or not, we all have germs that live in our mouths. They are always there. There is no medicine or mouthwash that will make them go away. Our mouths are an environment which they inhabit, and they are not going to move out or disappear. That is the truth and we have to accept it. The germs multiply and grow into a large organized sticky mass which forms a film and clings to everything in the mouth...lips, cheeks, gums, teeth...everything. The germs spend their life in this film. They are born, they die, they go to the bathroom and everything else that all living creature do. It is this filthy bacterial film that we call plaque. The dirty and toxic waste products of bacterial life is what causes all cavities and all gum disease.

If plaque is removed, disease can NOT happen.

We can not get rid of the germs that live in our mouth. The only thing that we can do is remove the plaque before it can harm us. That is why people use toothbrushes and dental floss.

Health is essential to orthodontic success.

Imagine conditioning for athletics while you are sick or injured. The conditioning would not work, plus you could harm yourself. Orthodontic treatment is a transformative process, just like physical training. If the mouth is unhealthy, the process will not work well, plus your mouth could be damaged. And the damage is permanent.
